The clinic had closed for the evening and most had already left. Lacey had finally screwed up her courage to tell Doc about the investigation. Heâd been so good to her, she didnât want him embarrassed in case the worst happenedâshe was arrested for Cathyâs murder. Especially after writing the recommendation for the Brown-Litchfield Scholarship.
She knocked on the doorjamb of his office. He looked up over the edges of his glasses, then again over stacks of papers. His organization skills werenât the best. âLacey, what can I do for you?â
âUm, I needed to talk to you about something going on.â Lacey hung in the doorway of his office.
His head canted. âSure. Whatâs going on?â
âI, shouldâve mentioned this yesterday.â She looked down at the brown tile, then back up. âUh, I am having a little problem right now and I wanted you to hear it from me first.â Lacey explained what had happened at the shelter and how the police suspected her in Cathyâs death. âI didnât want you to think I was keeping it from you.â She needed this job. Not just for the money. Doc knew so much and had been so generous.
A kind smile crossed Docâs grizzled features. âNo one could convince me youâd murder someone. Let me know if you need help with that.â
âGood grief, Doc, youâve done enough.â So much more than she couldâve ever expected.
âHow?â
âThe scholarship recommendation, taking me on farm calls, allowing me to get in way more supervised vet hours than the one hundred A and M requires. Food for Vixen?â Sheâd worked at the clinic for over a year and she couldnât have imagined a better employer.
He put down his pen and folded his gnarled fingers together. âIf you havenât figured it out yet, we work like a family around here. And we help family. If you need some time off, you know Hector will work it into the schedule.â
âNo. No time off.â Her bank account couldnât afford it. Especially if the scholarship didnât come through. âThanks, though.â
He smiled and said his good night, then bent his head back to his paperwork.
Lacey climbed into her truck with a lighter heart. Sheâd worried about telling him. Not that he wouldâve fired her. That heâd be disappointed in her.
She flipped on her headlights and pulled out of the lot. Finally, she could go to the address listed on Vixen's adoption paperwork to speak to the family. Her visit to the PS had taken up too much time before her clinic shift to make the trip earlier. They must be heartbroken she got out so quickly, though Lacey was surprised the shelter hadnât gotten a call from the family looking for her.
Lacey tapped the information into her phone's GPS. Weird. It was on the far side of San Angelo, easily twenty miles from where she'd found the dog Lacey would've sworn was Vixen. Maybe she just found a pup that looked like her. But that didn't seem right. Everything in her gut told her the dachshund was the same one from the shelter.
